Field
Band Foundation 2011National
Championships
(see newsletter)
The
National Championships of the Field
Band Foundation (FBF) is not a
commercial event but a public
evaluation process of a creative
social development organisation.
Although an amazingly exciting event
it has no real value for commercial
supporters and so the event over the
years has been funded mainly by
support from various arts
organisations.
|
|
We are
delighted to announce that the
Department of Arts and Culture is
supporting the bulk of the event this
year together with additional support
from De Beers.
The
Championship is the focus of all the
children taking part in the
Foundation's activities countrywide.
Each member auditions to qualify for
the privilege of taking part, for them
this is the culmination of the year's
work. The auditions also include
behaviour during the year – so
participation is not solely on musical
or artistic merit but on all aspects
of performing which includes
professional behaviour.
As
project tool it serves as a goal
towards which our members work over
the year and then have their results
judged by local and international
judges. This ensures that the
standards and quality of the project
improves consistently and the aim
remains excellence.
The
National Championship also introduces
a healthy competitive spirit that in
the long term will uplift the standard
of the projects to enable them to
function at a high level so as to be
able to sustain the project partially
with performance fees. The event is
designed to inspire creative
expression in a controlled situation.
All should underline the Foundation's
focus on excellence, self-confidence
and the acquiring of skills.

VLAMO AND THE FIELD BAND FOUNDATION
The relationship between Vlamo, the
Flemish organisation managing all
amateur music making in Flanders, and
the Field Band Foundation is now 4
years old. They have provided the FBF
with skills in the discipline of show
design and group percussion excellence
through sending specialists to our
workshops and teaching at the Field
Band Academy.
They
return annually to the National
Championships to evaluate the impact
of the training to ensure that the
training offered has the desired
outcome in the Field Bands on the
ground. They continue to assist the
FBF to offer excellence in our
programmes which is a very important
aspect of drawing the youth to the
activity. Everybody wants to be part
of something of quality and they have
played a meaningful role in achieving
this goal.
In 2011
Bart Tienpont, show design specialist
and Geert Vanmaeckelberghe, Vlamo Head of
Showbands will attend as
judges for the event to assess the
progress made by the Field Bands in
these elements.
This is
a very exciting partnership with
extraordinary commitment from Vlamo,
the Flemish Government and a very
special tribute to the support
received from the Flemish Delegation
in Pretoria. |

Out the Box
Festival – Pantalone –Bye Moon
(see newsletter)
"So
looooong, Moon!" cries Anton when he
goes home and discovers that he can't
take the moon along with him. But the
moon doesn't go away despite Anton's
goodbye. It is only when a storm comes
along that the moon disappears, or
doesn't it?
"Bye
Moon" tells the story of the
unique friendship between Anton and
the moon, or of how the persistence of
a faithful friend can make everything
seem grander.
|
|
On stage, the haunting music of a solo
violin plunges the audience into a
world of poetry and peace. This
enchanting production by Pantalone
theatre from Belgium, is a small
miracle of captivating visuals and
atmospheric music.
About
the company: Pantalone, based in
Brussels, brings together artists from
several different fields to take part
in a wide variety of productions: a
musical illustrated book, a multimedia
opera for children, a visual
concert.... The common thread is the
music that Pantalone performs to evoke
a world full of poetry, colour, shapes
and forms, movement and play. A world
that touches grown-ups as well as
children.
Composition by Filip Bral, artistic
director of Pantalone, Violin by
Katrien De Bièvre, Illustration and
animation by Axel Jacobs, Mastering by
Tom Daniels.
"Bye
Moon" is presented through the support
of the Delegation of the Flemish
Government.

Neville Tranter
at Out the Box Festival:
Neville Tranter from the
Netherlands, considered one of
the world’s finest puppeteers,
presents “Punch and Judy in
Afghanistan”, which preserves
the fun and directness of 'Punch
and Judy plays', while exploring
a more profound theme: what
happens when naivety and
cynicism meet? Punch & Judy in
Afghanistan is played behind and
in front of a sort of
traditional puppet theatre
booth. It combines traditional
elements of Punch & Judy with
fresh, sharp satire and a
masterful performance. 9 and 11
